Random Drink and Drug Tests

Police chief constables across the UK are calling on ministers in the house of commons to change current road laws. They are asking that they can be given the power to randomly check any driver on our roads, to check for illegal drink and drug use, and for tax and insurance violations.

Some police forces currently use check points to do spot checks on drivers, but the police wish to be able to take this further.

Poli9ce chiefs feel that by putting conditions on when a breath test can be issued supports the view that it is socially acceptable to drink and drive, yet avoid prosecution. Police currently have unrestricted power to check tyres, vehicle condition in general and for driver documents, but it is restricted whether they can test for drink and drugs. They hope that a random power would minimise the amount of drink drivers on the road as there would be the fear of being stopped at any point. International experiences negate that police presence on the road and random spot checks limits the amount of illegal drink and drug use when driving. It sends a clear signal to the public that it is not tolerated under any circumstances, and that the law is being enforced, which police officers are disillusioned about currently.

The police are also campaigning for the introduction of a drugalyser, to be used similarly to the breathalyser which is currently used on the roads for alcohol. They feel that by being able to test there and then rather than having to take the individual for a blood test, people will be caught and punished.
